You probably already know that getting enough sleep matters. But how you spend those hours asleep matters too.

Throughout the night, your brain repeatedly cycles through light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep. Each stage performs different functions involved in brain health, physical recovery, metabolism, memory and emotional regulation. Rather than thinking only about getting "eight hours," it can be helpful to understand what your body is actually doing during those eight hours.

A review: What are the stages of sleep?

Sleep is divided into two broad categories: non-REM (NREM) sleep and REM sleep. NREM sleep includes three stages, progressing from very light sleep into deep, slow-wave sleep.

A full sleep cycle—made up of NREM (light and deep sleep stages) and REM sleep—generally lasts around 90–110 minutes, and most adults move through several cycles over the course of a full night. But those cycles aren't identical. Deep sleep tends to be concentrated earlier in the night, while REM periods become progressively longer toward morning.

Here's what each stage is doing:

Light sleep: This includes NREM stages 1 and 2 and typically accounts for the largest portion of your night. Your heart rate and breathing slow, body temperature begins to fall and muscles relax. Stage 2 also includes distinctive bursts of brain activity called sleep spindles, which are thought to play a role in memory and learning.

Deep sleep: Also known as slow-wave sleep or NREM stage 3, this is the deepest and most physically restorative stage. It's concentrated more heavily during the first part of the night and is associated with processes including growth-hormone release, tissue repair, immune function and metabolic regulation.

REM sleep: REM stands for rapid eye movement. During this stage, brain activity increases, vivid dreaming commonly occurs and REM plays an important role in learning, memory and emotional processing. REM periods become longer as the night progresses, making the final hours of sleep particularly important for getting enough of it.

What does an ideal night look like?

There isn't one perfect sleep-stage breakdown that everyone needs to achieve. Sleep architecture naturally changes with age and varies somewhat from person to person and even night to night.

For a healthy adult, however, a typical night is approximately:

  • Light sleep: 50–60%

  • Deep sleep: 10–20%

  • REM sleep: 20–25%

The remaining small percentage may be spent briefly awake between sleep cycles. These numbers should be viewed as general ranges—not targets you need to hit every night.

And if you're getting these numbers from an Oura Ring, Apple Watch or another wearable, keep in mind that consumer devices estimate sleep stages based on signals such as movement and heart rate. They're useful for identifying patterns over time, but they aren't as precise as a clinical sleep study.

Why your sleep architecture matters for longevity

Getting enough total sleep gives your body the opportunity to move through the full range of restorative processes that happen across the night.

1. Deep sleep supports physical repair and recovery.
Deep sleep is closely connected with growth-hormone secretion, tissue repair and metabolic regulation. It is also the stage when the glymphatic system is most active, helping clear metabolic waste products from the brain. Protecting this stage becomes particularly relevant as we age because deep sleep naturally tends to decrease over the lifespan.

2. REM sleep supports brain health.
REM is involved in memory consolidation, learning and emotional processing. Because REM becomes more prominent later in the night, consistently cutting your sleep short may disproportionately reduce the REM-rich portion of your night.

3. Complete sleep cycles support whole-body recovery.
No single stage is the "best" stage of sleep. Your brain and body need the entire sequence. Regularly getting enough uninterrupted sleep allows you to cycle naturally between light, deep and REM sleep several times each night.

The longevity takeaway

Don't become overly focused on achieving a perfect deep-sleep or REM percentage on your wearable. Consistency, sufficient sleep duration and good sleep quality matter more than hitting an exact number.

Protect the entire night. Going to bed too late, waking too early or frequently interrupting your sleep doesn't simply reduce the number of hours you get—it can reduce your opportunity to move through the different stages your brain and body rely on for restoration.

For longevity, aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night, maintain consistent sleep and wake times, and pay attention to your sleep patterns over weeks and months rather than obsessing over a single night's score.
