Health Coach Tip – Can Meditation Support a More Resilient Brain?

Meditation is usually associated with relaxation and stress reduction. But emerging research suggests its effects may reach much deeper—potentially influencing the biological processes that allow the brain to adapt, reorganize and form new connections.

This ability is known as neuroplasticity, and maintaining it may be particularly important for longevity. Our brains aren't fixed once we reach adulthood. They remain capable of changing throughout life, allowing us to learn, adapt and respond to new experiences—and potentially helping the brain remain resilient as it ages.

A fascinating new 2026 study offers an early look at how intensive meditation and mind-body practices may influence this process.

What is neuroplasticity?

Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change its structure, function and neural connections in response to experience.

When you learn a new skill, form a memory, repeatedly practice a behavior or adapt to a new environment, networks of neurons can strengthen existing connections, weaken others and form new ones. This ability continues throughout adulthood, although aspects of plasticity can change with age.

From a longevity perspective, maintaining the brain's capacity to adapt may contribute to cognitive resilience—the ability to maintain cognitive function and respond to age-related changes or challenges.

Exercise, learning, quality sleep, social engagement and other lifestyle factors have all been associated with mechanisms related to neuroplasticity.

What does meditation have to do with neuroplasticity?

A 2026 study investigated 20 healthy adults participating in an intensive seven-day residential meditation retreat. The program included approximately 33 hours of guided meditation, alongside lectures and other mind-body practices.

Researchers evaluated participants before and after the retreat using brain imaging and blood samples. Following the retreat, they detected changes in brain connectivity as well as biological pathways related to immune activity, metabolism and the body's endogenous opioid—or natural pain-relief—system. 

But one experiment was particularly interesting.

Researchers exposed neurons grown in the laboratory to blood plasma collected from participants before and after the retreat. Neurons exposed to post-retreat plasma developed longer neurites and greater branching than those exposed to pre-retreat plasma. Neurites are projections from neurons that eventually develop into structures such as axons and dendrites, which allow neurons to communicate with one another.

In other words, something about the participants' circulating blood environment changed following the retreat in a way that appeared to promote neuronal growth in a laboratory setting.

3 ways meditation may support brain longevity

1. It may support neuroplasticity.
The new study suggests intensive meditation and mind-body practices may influence both brain connectivity and circulating biological factors associated with neuronal growth. Maintaining the ability to form and reorganize neural connections could be particularly valuable as the brain ages.

2. It may help regulate the stress response.
Chronic psychological stress can affect inflammatory signaling, hormones and brain function. Meditation practices can help reduce perceived stress and may influence physiological stress responses. Over decades, reducing chronic stress burden may be one way meditation contributes to a healthier environment for the aging brain.

3. It may help build cognitive and emotional resilience.
Meditation repeatedly asks the brain to direct attention, notice distraction and return focus to the present moment. Over time, practicing these skills may strengthen networks involved in attention and emotional regulation—capacities that remain important throughout the lifespan.

What this study doesn't tell us

As intriguing as these results are, they don't mean that seven days of meditation has been proven to "rewire" your brain.

The study included only 20 participants and did not have a randomized control group. The participants also weren't simply meditating for 10 minutes every morning—they completed an unusually intensive retreat involving roughly 33 hours of guided meditation as well as lectures and other mind-body interventions.

That makes it impossible to say that meditation alone caused every change researchers observed. And changes seen in neurons exposed to participants' plasma in a laboratory aren't the same thing as demonstrating new neuronal growth inside the participants' brains.

Instead, the study provides an intriguing biological clue that warrants further research. In the meantime, meditating can’t hurt!

How to put neuroplasticity into practice

Meditation may be more than a way to relax at the end of a stressful day. Research suggests mind-body practices may influence brain connectivity, stress biology and pathways related to neuroplasticity—all potentially relevant to maintaining a resilient brain as we age.

You also don't need to attend a seven-day meditation retreat to make meditation part of your longevity routine. Start with 5–10 minutes a day, find a practice you'll actually maintain and focus on consistency rather than perfection.

Alongside exercise, quality sleep, continued learning and strong social connection, meditation may be another way to regularly give your brain something it needs throughout life: the opportunity to adapt.
