Health Coach Tip - Why Your Brain May Need More Than Glucose as You Age

For decades, we've been told that glucose is the brain's primary fuel. While that's true, research suggests that as we age, the brain may become less efficient at using glucose for energy.
That subtle shift in metabolism may help explain why memory, focus, and mental sharpness can decline over time—and why supporting the aging brain may require thinking beyond glucose alone.
The brain's growing energy problem
Although your brain accounts for only about 2% of your body weight, it consumes roughly 20% of your daily energy. Most of that energy comes from glucose.
As we get older, however, brain cells can become less efficient at taking up and using glucose. Researchers have observed this decline decades before symptoms of cognitive impairment appear. Some scientists even refer to Alzheimer's disease as having features of "brain insulin resistance," although this term remains controversial and is not an official diagnosis.

3. Consider time-restricted eating
Allowing periods between meals may encourage your body to produce small amounts of ketones while improving metabolic flexibility. This isn't appropriate for everyone, so discuss fasting with your healthcare provider.
4. Prioritize Omega-3 fats
Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA, help maintain healthy brain cell membranes and support communication between neurons.
5. Protect your mitochondria
The brain depends heavily on healthy mitochondria. Eating colorful plants, exercising regularly, sleeping well, and managing chronic stress all support mitochondrial health.
