Every day in my practice, I see patients who are, for lack of a better word, frazzled. Their stressed-out bodies and brains are reacting to the strain of modern life in all sorts of ways, and none of them good. They come in foggy but anxious, exhausted but wired, and despite their exhaustion, can't seem to switch their racing brains off at night.

When I ask what a typical day looks like, the answer is almost always some version of this: emailing during Zoom calls, scarfing down lunch in the ten minutes they have "to spare," texting, scrolling, posting, parenting—you get the idea. The surprising part is how many wear this relentless juggling act as a badge of honor. Their bodies, however, tell a very different story.

Life today is undeniably complicated. But after four decades of practicing medicine—and thanks to a growing body of research from institutions including Stanford, MIT, and the American Psychological Association—I've become convinced of one thing: your brain was never designed to multitask. What we call multitasking is really rapid task-switching, and every switch comes at a cost. Not just to productivity, but to memory, attention, stress levels, blood pressure, eating habits, and over time, the health of your nervous system.

That matters because healthy aging isn't built only on the big things like exercise, nutrition, or sleep. It's also shaped by the thousands of small choices we make every day—including how we direct our attention. The way you use your brain today may influence how resilient your brain, heart, and metabolism remain decades from now.

So, let's take a closer look at why the multitasking habit so many of us celebrate may actually be quietly working against our long-term health—and what to do instead.

1. Each time you multitask, you brain pays a price.

Back in 2009, Stanford researchers set out to test whether heavy multitaskers had developed some kind of cognitive superpower—the enviable ability to juggle multiple streams of information with ease. Instead, they found just the opposite. The people who considered themselves expert multitaskers were worse at filtering out irrelevant information, holding details in working memory, and switching efficiently between tasks. The people most confident in their juggling abilities were, in fact, dropping the most balls.

Other research has reached similarly intriguing conclusions. Neuroscientists at the University of Sussex found that people who frequently multitask across different forms of media—for example, texting during a Zoom meeting while also answering emails—tended to have lower gray matter density in the anterior cingulate cortex, a region involved in attention, decision-making, impulse control, and emotional regulation. It's important to keep this finding in perspective, however. The study identified an association, not proof that multitasking caused those structural differences. Still, when an area of the brain so closely tied to focus and self-control consistently differs among habitual multitaskers, it's a relationship worth paying attention to.

Then there's the simple arithmetic of attention. Research highlighted by the American Psychological Association suggests that constantly switching between tasks can consume a substantial amount of productive time, with some estimates reaching as high as 40 percent. UC Irvine researchers have also found that after an interruption, it takes an average of more than 23 minutes to fully return to deep, focused work. In other words, the email you "just checked for a second" didn't really cost you thirty seconds. It may have stolen your next half hour of meaningful concentration.

So, if your workday includes fifty or even a hundred emails, it's not hard to understand why so many people feel mentally scattered by late afternoon.

The concern isn't simply today's productivity. Deep, sustained focus is one of the ways we build and maintain what's known as cognitive reserve, the brain's ability to adapt, compensate, and remain resilient as we age. While no single habit determines your future brain health, protecting your attention may be one small but meaningful investment in preserving cognitive function over the long haul.

2. Your heart's asking: Is it a text – or a tiger?!

Here's something I often tell my patients: your body doesn't grade stress on a curve. It doesn't know that an incoming Slack notification, or for that matter, fifteen of them during a meeting, is objectively less dangerous than a saber-toothed tiger. The brain is remarkably good at detecting demands on your attention, and each interruption can briefly activate your body's ancient fight-or-flight response.

Research summarized by Brown University Health shows that multitasking and frequent interruptions can elevate both heart rate and blood pressure as your sympathetic nervous system shifts into high alert. That's exactly what this system evolved to do when faced with genuine danger. The problem is that today, the "threat" is far more likely to be a vibrating phone than a charging predator.

One stressful morning isn't going to age your heart. But the body also keeps score over time. Repeated surges in heart rate and blood pressure—dozens of times a day, year after year—can contribute to the chronic physiological wear and tear that researchers increasingly associate with cardiovascular aging.

Longevity isn't about eliminating stress; that's impossible. It's about reducing unnecessary stressors that repeatedly activate biological systems designed for emergencies, not email. Every notification you choose not to respond to immediately is a small opportunity to let your nervous system recover instead of remaining on constant standby.

Your heart isn't asking you to spend your days meditating on a mountaintop. It's simply asking you to stop treating every notification as if your desk were on fire.

3. Multitasking is messing with how and what you eat.

A study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that eating while distracted by a phone or reading material increased overall calorie intake by roughly 15 percent, along with fat consumption. Harvard Health has reported similar findings: working, scrolling, or watching television during meals often causes people to eat more—not only during that meal, but later in the day as well—because a distracted brain doesn't fully register fullness or form a strong memory of having eaten.

A large meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reached much the same conclusion. Across numerous controlled studies, distraction during meals was consistently associated with increased food intake. One reason appears to be surprisingly simple: your memory of eating helps regulate future appetite. If your brain barely noticed the meal, your body may be slower to recognize that it's already been fed.

That makes screen-free meals about far more than mindfulness. They may also support healthier metabolic regulation over time by allowing the brain's appetite-control systems to work the way they were designed.

For those of us interested in healthy aging, that's no small thing. Metabolic health sits at the center of longevity research because it influences everything from cardiovascular disease to type 2 diabetes and cognitive decline. While putting your phone away at lunch won't transform your lifespan overnight, consistently paying attention to what—and how—you eat is one of those small daily habits that will add up over decades.

Think of eating without distractions as one of the simplest—and most overlooked—investments you can make in both your metabolism and your future health.

4. Blood pressure doesn't clock how efficient you think you’re being.

Blood pressure deserves its own moment because the biology is remarkably straightforward.

Every time your brain abruptly switches from one demanding task to another, it recruits your sympathetic nervous system—your body's built-in alert system. That response is designed to prepare you for action by increasing vigilance, nudging your heart rate upward, and constricting blood vessels just enough to raise blood pressure. Research summarized by Brown University Health shows that multitasking and frequent interruptions can produce these short-lived physiological changes, even when the "threat" is nothing more alarming than a spreadsheet competing with the family group chat.

Of course, a hectic Tuesday afternoon isn't likely to send your blood pressure into dangerous territory. There's no reason to panic over the occasional chaotic day.

What concerns physicians—and those of us interested in healthy aging—is the cumulative effect. Elevated blood pressure isn't harmful because it happens once. It's harmful because, over months and years, repeated elevations can contribute to the gradual wear on blood vessels and the cardiovascular system that increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and other age-related illnesses.

That's why managing your attention belongs in the same conversation as sleep, regular movement, and good nutrition. It isn't a substitute for those pillars of health, but it can support them by reducing unnecessary physiological stress throughout the day.

Sometimes the most powerful intervention isn't adding another supplement or gadget. It's simply creating enough quiet space for your cardiovascular system to spend more time doing what it was designed to do: recover.

5. Multitasking gets in the way of your nervous systems need to chill.

Perhaps the most revealing research looks at what multitasking does beneath the surface—inside the nervous system itself.

A 2023 randomized controlled trial followed nearly 200 healthy adults through multitasking and work-interruption scenarios while researchers measured salivary alpha-amylase (a marker associated with sympathetic nervous system activity), heart rate variability (an indicator of parasympathetic—or "rest and repair"—function), and cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone.

Their findings were telling. Multitasking and frequent interruptions consistently activated the sympathetic nervous system and increased participants' feelings of stress. Interestingly, cortisol levels did not rise significantly during the experiment.

That doesn't mean multitasking is harmless. It simply reminds us that the body's stress response is remarkably complex. Not every stressful experience produces a measurable cortisol surge, and researchers are still working to understand why different stressors activate different biological pathways.

What we do know is that repeatedly nudging the nervous system into a low-grade state of vigilance leaves fewer opportunities for recovery. And recovery is where much of the body's maintenance work happens. It's when heart rate slows, blood pressure falls, digestion improves, tissues repair themselves, and the brain consolidates memories while preparing for the next day's challenges.

Over months and years, healthy aging depends not only on how well we respond to life's demands, but also on how completely we recover from them. A nervous system that spends too much time anticipating the next interruption may have fewer opportunities to fully shift into that restorative mode.

That's one reason I encourage patients to think of protecting their attention as more than a productivity strategy. It's a recovery strategy. And recovery is one of the quiet foundations of resilience, cognitive health, and longevity.

Ultimately multitasking isn't just stealing your focus. It may also be stealing some of the restorative downtime your brain and body need to stay healthy over the long haul.

This won’t hurt a bit – breaking up with multitasking.

Like most less-than-stellar habits, there comes a time when letting go of them becomes a vote for your health—not just today, but years from now. Healthy aging rarely hinges on one dramatic decision. More often, it's built from thousands of ordinary moments when your brain and body are allowed to do what they evolved to do: focus deeply, recover fully, eat with awareness, sleep soundly, and move through the day without constant interruption.

Here are a few simple ways to step off the Multitasking Express and into a healthier lane.

1. Give your urgency instinct a reality check.

As in, slow your roll. Almost nothing is as urgent as it feels in the moment. Instead of responding to every text or email the instant it arrives, take a breath and check messages at scheduled intervals. Three or four windows a day is a good starting point—and if your work allows, even fewer may be better.

2. Close each task the way you'd close a good conversation.

Before switching gears, jot down one sentence about where you left off. It's a small ritual, but it clears the mental residue that otherwise trails into whatever comes next. As an added bonus, you'll also create a running roadmap of exactly where to pick up when you return.

3. Banish the phone to another room, not just face-down on your desk.

Research suggests that a phone's mere presence can subtly consume some of your available attention, even when you're trying to ignore it. Putting it out of sight and out of reach reduces the temptation to check it and frees up valuable cognitive bandwidth.

4. Eat at least one meal a day without a screen in sight.

Give your brain the chance to fully experience your meal. Notice the flavors, the pace, and what "full" actually feels like. Your appetite and your metabolism (and digestion too) will appreciate the slower pace.

5. Work in sprints, not endless drift.

Aim for twenty-five to fifty minutes of uninterrupted focus on one task, followed by a genuine break. The goal isn't speed—it's protecting the mental runway your brain needs to reach deep focus. If you're working against a deadline but need to get into a creative or analytical flow, set a timer so you can stay fully engaged without constantly checking the clock.

6. Kill the notification badges, not just the sounds.

Reduce the noise by turning off the pings and the visual alerts. Those badges and on-screen banners are designed to pull your attention away from what you're doing. Removing both the visual and audible cues can help ease your brain out of a perpetual state of high alert.

7. Practice "one-tab" living during deep work.

When it's time to concentrate, keep open only the tab or application you're actively using. The small amount of effort required to reopen another tab is often just enough friction to interrupt a mindless task-switching habit before it starts.
