What are the biggest problems you see with the way Medicine is practiced today?

Here is my list, I am sure there are more

  1. Modern Western Medicine is based on a narrow “scientific” model, and arrogantly ignores and rejects therapies and entire medical systems that don’t fit this model.
  2. Doctors are trained in hospitals in “crisis care” medicine, not to take care of the “walking wounded”, which is the majority of people. They need to be trained to take of the “walking wounded” as well.
  3. Instead of treating the underlying causes or imbalances, Doctors often merely manage symptoms. Symptoms are seen as something to be suppressed rather than a pointer to some underlying imbalance.
  4. Doctors see the human body as a machine with separate parts that can be treated independently rather than as an integrated whole. In addition the mind and body are also seen as separate independent entities and emotions are often ignored.
  5. Man is not seen as part of nature and how what happens in nature effects humans.
  6. We look for a magic bullet instead of all the possible factors that make up the total load which are causing the underlying imbalance. No understanding of the total load.
  7. No belief that the body has a self healing capacity and no ways to boost that capacity.
  8. Everyone with the same disease gets treated the same way, patient uniqueness ignored.
  9. We treat the disease, not the patient.
  10. There is a reliance on numbers and tests rather than how the patient is feeling and what is found on examination.
  11. We don’t take into account the importance of diet and lifestyle on health. How could we? We get a total of 6-8 hours of nutrition lectures in medical school.
  12. We don’t recognize or understand the correct use of supplements to optimize health.
  13. We don’t recognize the importance of toxicity on our bodies nor know how to boost the body’s own detoxification systems.
  14. The Doctor patient relationship is not emphasized and the role of the patient as a partner in their own health care not encouraged.
  15. The placebo has a negative connotation and ignored. The placebo is really the body healing itself and should be encouraged.
  16. The Drug Industry is too enmeshed in the medical system The Pharmaceutical Industry has WAY TOO MUCH power and is “bribing” Doctors to use their drugs and researchers to produce positive results for their drugs.
  17. More than 80% of all medical treatments used have been untested by rigorous peer reviewed study, yet the Medical establishment insists that alternative health treatments must undergo these before they can be used. The system of evaluation needs to be changed.

    In the spirit of adding more – I recently went to a well known knee surgeon who is affiliated with a respected hospital to have my knee examined because it had been locking. From my entrance to exit I was treated as a non-human.
    While waiting for my x-ray and during the x-ray process the technician was speaking on his cell phone. This was dis-quieting. In the past I spoke up during similar experiences and was always met with defensive responses, so I decided to be quiet.
    After the x-ray I was left in a room for approx. 1/2 hour to wait for the doctor. The x-ray was brought in and hanging on the wall so because I had some much free time I decided to look at it to see if I could see anything. I was anxious about my knee of course. I noticed that the data on my x-ray was incorrect. ( Probably due to the fact that the technician was on his cell phone. ) Finally the doctor entered the room. He spoke to me like a robot – asking me questions and when I pointed out that the data was incorrect he just responded in a mechanized like tone -., Oh it is good you told me because we could not have found this x-ray again. Again his response was very robot-like. There was no gratitude or caring emotion in his voice. I was thinking that it was a good thing that at least I was alert and had the presence of mind to look out for myself. I was thinking what about if I or others were in a condition of being so ill
    or incapacitated that this was not possible. Thankfully my knee was not seriously damaged. I cut back on my kickboxing classes and it healed on its own.

    I totally agree with the above 17 points. I tend to be somewhat paranoid about all prescribed medicines. We know that the pharmacuetical companies are drug pushers for their bottom line. Like the oil companies – $$$$'s matter more than the human being.

    Western Medicine = profit over truth. It’s a sad commentary the way pharmaceuticals are shoved down people’s throats. Once in the Dr.’s office, this lady sitting next t to me said in a very exasperated, impatient tone…” I wish the hell he (the Dr.) would hurry up so I can get my antibiotics for this bronchitis and get the hell out of here.” I asked her if she smoked. She did. I told her I quit and that she could too. Again, exasperated…..impatient…..demanded to know what pill I took to effectively quit. She wouldn’t listen when I told her no pills were involved. Finally, her name was called and off she went. I can’t help thinking that she is one of millions who have been brainwashed by western medicine and whose constant search for another pill, will continue to lead her down the path of “self-destruction.”
