The Center For Food Safety

About The Center for Food Safety:

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) is a non-profit public interest and environmental advocacy membership organization established in 1997 by its sister organization, International Center for Technology Assessment, for the purpose of challenging harmful food production technologies and promoting sustainable alternatives. CFS combines multiple tools and strategies in pursuing its goals, including litigation and legal petitions for rulemaking, legal support for various sustainable agriculture and food safety constituencies, as well as public education, grassroots organizing and media outreach.

What They Do:

The Center for Food Safety uses multifaceted strategies, including legal actions, submission of policy comments and public education, to accomplish its goals of curtailing industrial agricultural production methods that harm human health and the environment, and promoting sustainable alternatives.

Legal and policy staff work to monitor and/or alter policies established by the three primary federal agencies involved in regulating the nation’s food supply, i.e., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

CFS also provides technical assistance to numerous legislative initiatives championed by other non-profit organizations around the country. Public outreach and advocacy staff work to educate and activate CFS members and consumers about key food and agriculture actions and issues, and to mobilize their support for all CFS legal, policy and grassroots actions. CFS’s True Food Network is a resource for anyone interested in learning more about important food issues and voicing their opinion!

CFS has offices in Washington, DC and San Francisco, CA.
