I have been a huge fan of EWG.org for many years. It is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that’s committed to using the power of information to protect human health and the environment. The Environmental Working Group‘s mission is to keep toxins out of our air, water, food and bodies and they have continually been on the forefront of researching toxins in the environment and telling the public where these toxins are. As we are in the middle of summer, I thought it appropriate to turn you on to a piece they did on Sunscreens recently.

EWG’s brand new review of 1,572 products found that 3 out of 5 sunscreens offer inadequate protection from the sun or contain ingredients with significant safety concerns. And for the first time, they also review sun-protective lip balms and lotions.

They identified fewer than 100 products that offer very good sun protection with ingredients that present minimal health risks to users. Leading brands like Coppertone, Banana Boat and Neutrogena fared poorly.
