My favorite cd so far this year is Laru Beya by Aurelio Martinez, the new star of Garifuna music. The threatened Garifuna culture from Central America fuses African and Caribbean roots and Aurelio has become the major tradition-bearer since Andy Palacio died a few years ago. “Laru Beya” translates as ‘By The Beach’ and it’s an apt title for this album which spans the Atlantic ocean and was recorded in Honduras, Belize & Senegal, where Aurelio worked with Youssou N’Dour and Orchestra Baobab (2 of my favorites), who both guest on it. This is a beautiful, rhythmic, pulsating and soulful album …..Watch the making of it
