20 New Year Resolutions from Dr. Lipman

When I qualified as a Doctor at 25 years old, I thought I knew everything there was to know about health and medicine. By the age of 30, I realized my medical training was limited and I didn’t really know much about health and wellness. So I went on a journey of discovery to expand my horizons and studied acupuncture, Chinese medicine, Functional medicine, nutrition, yoga and Buddhism. By 50, I realized my life training was limited too as my daughter (a teenager at the time) was pointing out “how stupid” I was.  And now that I am 55, I realize I have amassed a lot of knowledge but have so much more to learn.

As I get older and hopefully wiser with every year, certain insights become clearer. Here are some of them gleaned from the wisdom I have gained from 30 years of marriage, having a 22 yr old daughter, 30 years of practicing medicine and being a perpetual student of life.

More Chewing, Less Eating

More Water, Less Soda

More Walking, Less Driving

More Exercising, Less Watching TV

More Recycling, Less Waste

More Outdoors, Less Indoors

More Sleep, Less Worry

More Slow, Less Hurry

More Smiles, Less Anger

More Love, Less Hatred

More Fun, Less Serious

More Letting Go, Less Holding On

More Being, Less Doing

More Generosity, Less Greed

More Forgiving, Less Blaming

More Ubuntu, Less Me!

Ubuntu means what makes us human is the humanity we show each other. It is a Xhosa (South African) word and philosophy emphasizing community, sharing and generosity.

As Archbishop Desmond Tutu says:

“Ubuntu is about the essence of being human, it is part of the gift that Africa will give the world. It embraces hospitality, caring about others, being able to go the extra mile for the sake of others. We believe that a person is a person through another person, that my humanity is caught up, bound up, inextricably, with yours. When I dehumanize you, I inexorably dehumanize myself. The solitary human being is a contradiction in terms and therefore you seek to work for the common good because your humanity comes into its own in belonging”.

    I have recently begun to get a rash on the back of my right knee…it comes and goes…it is usually about
    2″x3″, somewhat itchy and looks bad as it is very red…

    I have also, not always at the same time as the above, developed an itchy right elbow…no marks just itchy enough that I would like to tear the skin off…any insight into these two situations would be great.

    Hello, I have a few questions about my health….Breast cancer 4yrs ago…surgery, chemo and radaition. Had
    cardic arrest and congested heart failure last year. Have been in A-Fib for a year…just came out of A-Fib with the drug Amiodarone but want to get weaned off it to go on iodine (natural) Iodoral, also want to get on
    desiccated thyroid medicine, I also have a thyroid problem now and I am on Levothroxie. I also have sleep apena, osteoporsis and numerous other problems. The question is do you think it is a good idea to get off the powerful drugs (with side effects) and try and go the natural way, or do you think I need the drugs to stay out of A-Fib….I also take 11 prescribtions for my heart including Warfain and Plavix.

    Sleep apnea is a tough one because if you don't treat it, it can have deleterious effects. Havinng said that, my experience has been especially if people are overweight, changing ones diet, usually going on a gluten free, sugar free, dairy free diet and losing weight can be helpful

    yes keep a food jouranl
    also it may be related to a digestive problem, you may need probiotics and or anti microbial herbs. Best to work with a Functional Medicine Practitioner on this

    I had thyroid removed many years ago because of nodules resulting from radiation 35 years prior…I have been on T4 Levoxyl many years, and T3 cytomel was added but after a few months taken off of it because pulse was too high…Now I am cold at night and running a low temp in daytime…It is impossible to lose weight and have aches and pains and anxiety….stuck in sympathetic system…suggested I have fibromyalgia but I do not like meds and have decided not to take Cymbalta or Savella. I do energy work to bring my temperature back up to normal 98….How do you know if you really have fibromyalgia…all my symptoms are either hypothyroid or fibromyalgia.
    I have read fibromyalgia means toxic liver…I get very ill everytime I try to do a detox…I read your book and would come to see you but not affordable at this time. I also have spondilitheisis and some stenois at L5…I am 60 years old and want to feel better as I have lots to do…any suggestions? I take a lot of magnesium for pain ,, cramps, constipation.

    Fibromyalgia is often because of poor thyroid function. It sounds like you
    should go back on Cytomel. That would be my suggestion

    I love your blog…I am getting unbearable thigh cramps at night that last half an hour and am wondering if it is circulation, low back stenois ( I am 63), spondylitheseis or from what I ate. The only things to help is MagPhos tissue salts but I think I take way too many 25-30 at a time with hot water. Can you make any suggestions? thanks

  • its probably not poor circulation or stenosis it definitely could be
    magnesium and or potassium deficiency. Not sure of your dosae of
    Magnesium, but you should be taking 500-1000mg at night
